Do You Write Articles For The Reader?

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Why do you write articles for distribution online? If it is just so you can be an “author,” you can skip this article. If it is to generate traffic to your website, you need to be writing for the reader. Here are some ways to do that.

1. Write articles on topics that interest you. This may seem contrary to the idea of writing for the reader, but it isn’t. It is safe to assume that you are not the only one interested in a given topic. Writing about your own interests keeps you motivated, and you’ll usually do a better job. You also normally will have more knowledge to share in an area of interest than in an area you just chose because it is popular.

2. Write a title that catches the reader’s attention. There are many ways to do this, and this is a topic worthy of it’s own article. The short lesson? Use words like “how to,” “easy ways to,” ten ways to,” “secrets,” and “try this.” Titles that are questions can be effective too.

3. Make your writing easy on the eyes. Don’t have sentences that go on and on endlessly, with more words than are necessary to make the point and without enough commas to break them up into digestible parts, and with no good reason to be that long, and which easily could have been cut into two or more shorter, easier-to-read sentences that would have been more relaxing to read - in other words, avoid sentences like this one. Oh, and have concise paragraphs of two to six sentences.

4. You should, of course, try to write articles that are truly useful, interesting or entertaining. If you can do all three in one article, that’s great. At the very least, though, try to include something in your article that will be new to the average reader. Second best is describing things they already know, but in new ways. You often have to cover the same points as similar articles, but do more than that as well.

5. Keep the language simple. After scrutinizing many articles, I consider the evidence to be incontrovertible that pretentiousness in the elucidation of your information makes the loss of the reader ineluctable. In other words, use too many big words and you’ll scare away many readers. You can say what you like using simple words like the ones in this sentence. No reader will stop reading a good article because the language is too simple.

6. Write a resource box that make it easy for the reader to see where he can go for more information. A list of your dozen degrees and awards will not impress him or be helpful. Say one or two things about yourself, then have a clear link, and a description of what the reader will find at your web site.

This is a short lesson on how to write articles for readers. You should also use the right keywords, so readers can find the article, and write an article description that makes them want to read it. If you also want your articles used by others, you have to write articles not only for readers, but for newsletter and web site owners. That, however, is a topic for another article.

Selecting Speakers For Your iPod

Friday, February 29th, 2008

More and more people are purchasing a set of speakers for their iPods, some to replace their current home audio set ups in order to get rid of the cd collections that take up so much room, some to have a portable audio source for when they are away on holiday, some just for having some iPod speakers because everyone else is buying them! One of the problems we come across the most is people being faced with a huge selection of choices and feeling bewildered about what to buy. What I am aim to do is make your choice that little bit easier.

We can break down the different sets of speakers into the following categories:

Portable and powered by batteries.

Portable and powered by mains adapter.

Home Set up powered by mains adapter.

For those of you looking for a portable set that is powered by batteries there are a variety of excellent options at varying prices. Personally I am of the belief that whatever amount of money you are spending it is important that sound quality is pretty good as what use is a light speaker set that has crackily sound! If you are looking to spend under ?50 then we highly rate both the Logic 3 i-Station 7 and the Monster iSpeaker. Both of these are very light to carry, are of a size very conveninet for putting ina backpack or suitcase and run for a good amount of time on batteries, sound from both is exceptional for this pricepoint with great clarity.

If you are looking to spend a little more then a lot of options open up in the ?50 to ?150 bracket. If lightweight is your number one problem then you will not go far wrong with the JBL On Tour, this is an incredibly lightweight unit that what it lacks in bass it makes up for in the sound clarity department. If you would prefer better sound quality then a step up to an Altec Lansing IM5 or Logitech MM50, Saitek A250 and for iPod Nano Owners the XtremeMac MicroBlast. All of these provide excellent sound alongside good looks and a highly portable structure. Once your budget is going over ?150 you are in to the realms of a great portable system in the Altec Lansing IM7, thumping bass, crystal clear treble and a great portable structure, definetly the daddy of portable iPod Docking Stations and Speaker units.

If you would like something that can be considered portable but don’t mind having to use a mains charger then there are a couple of good options available. One of our favourites is the Macally IceTune, this is indeed one of our top 5 iPod accessories altogether, when stacked up it looks like a coke can and has two separate speakers that can be removed and pointed to send sounds in different directions, the sound quality is excelletn for only ?39.99 and it is very much portable but does require mains power. The JBL On Stage is another wonderful compact and lightweight unit that can be plugged into the mains for power and will charge your iPod while you listen to it, very high quality sound, lacks bass a littel but you are compromising bass to have such a small portable unit, clarity of sound and loudness are both very impressive. Another excellent unit in this bracket is the Logic 3 iStation 8, newly released and keeping up the fabulous reputation of the iStation 7 this really is worth the money, great combinations of bass and treble and very much a portable size and weight.

For the home set up there are a variety of options and in honesty the best value speakers in our opinion come at this price point. For just ?59.99 you can have a pair of JBL Creature II’s, these are surely one of the greatest home electronics products to ever hit the market, the bass is phenomenal and the clarity is superb, vocals sound great for many types of music, they also look very appealing and are bound to interest visitors who glaze their eyes upon them! Also in the JBL range are the Encounters, these expand on the Creature philosophy of an alien themed set of speakers and have even stronger bass, they are quite simply phenomenal! At this price point we also have the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks, for a long time these have been my individual favourite speakers, they are see through so you can have a look at what is going on inside and provide possibly the clearest vocals you will hear from iPod focused speakers they are simply outstanding, perhaps not as strong bass as the Encounters but still more than enough for most pallettes. For anyone considering a home iPod set up I strongly suggest a very close look at the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks they are oustanding and will fit in to 99% of home settings in the living room, dining room, kitchen etc!

Hopefully this guide has been of some use to you choosing your speakers, firstly establish which of the three categories your requirements for speakers come into and then you can use the above advice to direct you to some great units, we wish you the best of luck in your choice!

Dress For Success

Friday, February 29th, 2008

You have always imagined how this meeting would be. From the moment you exited your college doors to the moment you applied for this amazing opportunity at the company of your dreams, you have been fantasizing how your conversational skills would lead you closer to a job proposal that will excite you. But, have you ever considered that apart from building your professional experience and advancing your academic background, the condition of your wardrobe can be a crucial factor for your prospective employer to base his/her decision on? All around the globe, HR professionals agree that candidates who select to wear clean and matching clothes actually increase their chances of being offered the position they are after.

It is common in today’s professional environment for people to wear their “business” outfit during office hours and their casual clothes during leisure time. Whether you have realized it or not, you are probably a member of this fast-pace attire couture, as you open your closet in the morning to wear one of your business suits leaving your jeans hanging for the more “relaxed” atmosphere of the weekend or a barbeque party. But even if your office dress code does not explicitly direct you to wear formal business garments, when you are about to be interviewed for a new job it is important you will select to wear your professional-looking clothes.

As a matter of fact, my personal experience has led me to conclude that the outfit I will select to wear before having to give a small speech about my abilities and skills can direct the attention of my future employer to what I am saying instead to how I look. Contemporary business culture demands from the person that wishes to enter a business environment, of any kind, to look sharp and professional. Thus, it is crucial for candidates to choose carefully their apparel so as to reflect the generally accepted working dress-code, apart from their personal taste. Regardless if the position is that of a senior or a junior executive, HR agencies inform the individuals they manage to pay attention to their appearance as much as they should practice what they are going to elaborate on when explaining their professional experience and skills. There is not one recruiter out there that would overlook the way interested professionals look when they are invited for the first round of interviews. As the old saying goes, “An image says 1,000 words.”

But, while one should be conscious of the impact a carefully chosen wardrobe has to the overall image he or she is about to give, going over the business dress-code line is not advisable by anyone. For instance, women that wear heavy makeup or men that select to wear an extremely expensive suit might give to the interviewer the wrong impression regarding their professional status and overall character. In fact, one might loose a perfectly good opportunity to get the position he or she is about to be interviewed due to a poor or over-the-top appearance. Dressing casually or over-dressing will never lead you to the desired result. Thus, before meeting with your potential employer, it is imperative to consult with friends, who have working experience in the business field you wish to enter, so as to learn as much as possible in relation to the working outfit recruiters and business executives consider as acceptable. Consequently, it is important for you to plan ahead and invest in purchasing the “right” type of clothes. Being proactive today will give you tomorrow the opportunity to buy that piece of clothing that your future boss would characterize as “extreme,” but your partner or friends would adore.

Bollywood Movie Review - Lage Raho Munnabhai

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Okay fingers up, how many of you have seen this movie? May not be a blockbuster or a box office hit hindi movie but it is definitely worth a watch. Perhaps more than once. Why? Just imagine, Sanjay Dutt tackling his enemy by following the principles of Mahatma Gandhi. For the uninitiated, he is a beefcaked bollywood actor with a really mean mafia look who looks like a former Brisbane Lions regular player. I was refering to the former of course.

This is definitely one of my favourite movies as the story, screenplay and entertainment factors are brought up very well. This movie goes down as one of the most meaningful movies in Indian film industry. The essence of the movie is about applying the teachings of Gandhi in today’s world and downright hilariousness is ensured from the pairing of Arshad Warsi and Sanjay Dutt. Hahaha… watch it. No seriously… watch it.

Story:

This is the second installment to the Munnabhai MBBS movie series. The kind hearted don, Munnabhai (played by Sanjay Dutt), researches day and night on Mahatma Gandhi in order to impress the lady of his dreams and that is when Gandhi appears in front of him either as a soul or a figment of Munnabhai’s hallucination. An adventure then starts in a meaningful way for him where he learns how to deal with people and their problems by applying Gandhi’s principles.

Screenplay:

Perhaps the sole challenge of the movie is the application of Gandhi’s philosophy to solve today’s people related problems and it is carried out so well in the movie. The comic timing of Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi is flawless. Boman Irani, in his typical fashion of doing something different in each movie, contributes further to the comedy by portraying a very stereotypical image of a Sardar. Even though the comedy does justice to the entertainment factor on a high scale, it does not deviate from the central theme and is able to deliver all the messages beautifully.

Cinematography:

Cinematography is done fairly well according to a typical Indian movie standard.

Video Editing:

There is not much video editing for the movie since there is no need for it. It is mainly focused in songs, especially in the Pal Pal song sang by Bollywood melody queen, Shreya Ghoshal.

How To Look Chic And Cool On Campus: Five Tips On Buying A School Bag

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Many bags nowadays have the triple F factor–fun, fashion, and function. With the wide range of available choices, you can walk around school in comfort and style. To help you achieve that, here are several tips you’ll find handy:

1) Go for established choices.

When you’re shopping for a school bag, look for backpacks, messenger bags, boat totes, duffel bags, laptop-style carriers, and ruby Tuesday bags. These types are popular choices among students for very good reasons–they are often spacious enough to accommodate a lot of stuff and also often made of materials that can withstand being stretched to the limit. If you always lug around a ton of readings and notes, such a feature in a bag is a welcome respite from sore arms.

2) Consider the weight of your everyday load.

Think about the weight you’ll be carrying on a daily basis. This will help you determine the size of the bag that’s just perfect for your needs. A big bag with hardly anything inside looks limp; on the other hand, a small one bursting at the seams looks bulky. If you get the right size, the bag retains its shape even with all of your necessary school things in it.

3) Look at your current wardrobe.

The bag you choose should go along with most of the clothes in your closet. If your style is feminine and flirty (think blouses and skirts), a utilitarian messenger bag is not going to sit right on you. You’re better off with a boat tote. The same goes with the reverse. If your look is sporty with your cargo pants and t-shirts, a backpack is a better choice than a dainty ruby Tuesday bag.

4) Pick quality over quantity.

Your school bag is meant to carry a considerable weight. You can’t afford to buy just any cheap bag unless you want to run the risk of it falling apart when you least expect it. This means you have to buy something expensive or you have to patiently look for a good bargain. Whatever your budget is, you have a much better option than settling for a low-quality bag.

5) Opt for a safe color.

If your budget permits you to buy just one high-quality bag, buy it in solid black, navy blue, brown, gray, or white. These colors go well with other hues so you don’t have to worry about looking mismatched. If that sounds too boring for you, you can always jazz up your bag with scarves, brooches, and other accessories.

You don’t have to look like you’re walking down a Parisian catwalk when you’re in school, but you don’t have to be careless about your appearance either. It’s not just about looking great for vanity’s sake. It’s also about making good impressions on your teachers and fellow students. After all, it never hurts to get straight As in your subjects…and in fashion, too.

Life Is A Test?

Friday, February 29th, 2008

I rarely ever remember a dream. Even when I can remember what I was dreaming about when I have to get up for a drink or bathroom break in the middle of the night, I have forgotten all about it by morning.

However, last night I had a dream that made me analyze my life and my thought processes on a day to day basis.

I was dreaming about taking a test. I am not sure the subject of the test. I do remember feeling under pressure and I was struggling a bit with the content of the test.

Now, I have taken my share of tests in the past and can recall having these types of dreams while in college; but, why now?

I jotted down a few notes before going back to bed and did my best to decipher this brain spark this morning.

I am into several projects right now in which I am under the microscope, so to speak. But, am I? Is this all in my head? Do I bring all this pressure on myself?

Probably.

I try to be the best I can be; mentally, physically, and financially. I try to learn as much as possible to improve my abilities in these areas. This is great as long as I don’t spend so much time trying to improve me that it harms my life in these same areas; i.e. stress, family, friends, health, etc.

We all see the “burn-out” in the self-improvement entrepreneur; the sacrifices made in the “important things” in life such as relationships and peace of mind.

Peace of mind should be a top priority for mental, physical, and financial success. Living life as some sort of constant test will hamper this process.

Realizing that progress is a “you vs. you” phenomenon and that you don’t have to please someone else on a day to day basis is a great start.

Bryan Tracy, in his audio series from Nightingale Conant entitled “Action Secrets for Personal Achievement,” talks about the need for certain people to get the approval of others. He calls this a symptom of Type “A” behavior.

Here are some of the other type “A” symptoms:

Having a sense of urgency to do more and more in less and less time.

Volunteering for more and more work at the office.

Feeling under pressure to get activities accomplished.

Being obsessed with your performance and having high standards for such performance.

The type “A” personality can’t relax and enjoy an accomplishment, they feel like they have never done enough.

Compare self with others.

More concerned with things than with people.

Brings home work.

Talks about the boss, what the boss said, what the boss did… wants to please the boss at all times.

Has a sense of hostility towards those he or she feels to be competing against.

Type “A’s” cannot admit that they are not in control.

If you fall into any of the above categories, making a decision to change may be a great first step. This decision involves trying to relax and still be productive and effective without the added stress we type “A’s” like to impart.

There are two things that have worked in the past for me (and my clients) that I am going to focus on after this “wake-up call.”

One is a daily exercise plan. Even when I am on the road, I usually do some exercise daily, but, there are times I get in a rut and don’t focus on my planning and execution of a said workout. A daily routine helps relieve stress and will bring out creativity and problem solving abilities like no other activity!

It is a “reality check” for me as well. Things are brought into a better perspective after a good workout, no matter how long the workout is.

This is Stephen Covey’s take on exercise (from his book The 8th Habit): “I am convinced that exercise increases our own sense of self-control and self-mastery, which enhances the totality of our lives and truly enlarges the space between stimulus and response.”

The second concept is practicing daily solitude. This could be a twenty minute walk, a power relaxation/almost nap, hanging out on a park bench, etc. This is a time to let your mind “go” and let your subconscious work on goals, problems, and/or ideas that are filling your head - a “mind-cleansing” if you will.

I try to do two, one-hour solitude sessions per week to let my subconscious mind take over and do its thing for me. This is a time when I just sit back and take in the world, usually outside in a fairly secluded place without interruptions. I sometimes think about a couple of goals or issues in my life ahead of time, then sit back and let my brain work on things.

I tend to find some answers to problems as well as some pretty great ideas to take back to work with me. They not only help me achieve goals, but relieve stress at the same time. These two activities alone have probably added years to my life and helped me through some potentially stressful times.

Thus, the reason for my dream. I have been in situations recently in which I feel the need to “prove” myself. I am living my life as a series of tests… daily. I have felt out of sorts, not myself, lacking confidence.

All brought on by myself.

Life is not a test. To me, it is a series of learning experiences.

My goal is to strengthen the area between stimulus and response (see quote above and The 8th Habit by Stephen Covey) on a daily basis; mentally, physically, and financially. As that space continues to grow with experience and knowledge, my life and dreams will put a smile on my face.

Thanks for letting me think out loud today.

Sweet dreams.

Sterling Silver Money Clips

Friday, February 29th, 2008

It’s always harder to shop for gifts for men than for women because although they have fewer accessories to choose from, they tend to be more picky than women especially when they have an “image” to maintain. If you’re looking for the perfect gift that your man won’t feel ashamed of using, stay away from risky clothes and jewelries and start visiting accessory boutiques to look for the best sterling silver money clip you can find.

Why Sterling Silver?

Sterling silver unlike other types of silver won’t get rusty even when it’s exposed to water and other elements. As such, your man won’t have to worry about getting his sterling silver money clip ruined when there’s a sudden downpour.

Sterling silver is also considered a classy material especially when compared to materials like leather. It is also more durable and it definitely won’t break or bend easily when pressure and force are exerted.

Money Clips vs. Wallets

Although there are more styles, colors, and designs to choose from when shopping for wallets, there are also more disadvantages to be found if you choose to purchase a wallet instead of a money clip for your man.

Firstly, wallets usually create a noticeable bulge in the pocket which effectively reduces the sexiness of the person. If you want your man to look good, he’ll be better off with a slim and compact sterling silver money clip.

Secondly, there’s no turning back time when your wallets become victims of wear and tear. Old leather will always be old leather. Immortality on the other hand is granted to sterling silver money clips. All you have to do is polish them regularly with the right cleaning tools and you’ll have a brand new looking money clip all the time!

Thirdly, money’s more accessible when using a money clip. All you have to do is pull off the exact kind and number of paper bills you need and payment is instantly made.

Fourthly, money clips are especially advantageous to men who love playing the field. Instead of having to changing photos in their wallets all the time to avoid hurting their current flavor of the month, no evidence can be garnered against them when they’re using money clips. It’s just money after all!

One major concern of yours should be that you are actually getting the right kind of metal, and that the money clip is indeed made of sterling silver, it is never too difficult to find someone who understands something about silver and get them to the shop with you. It is also advisable that you think about the person you are getting this for, ideally the money clip should be fitted to their habits and needs, if you will observe the person you will know what kind of money clip will suit him best.

Money clips are a perfect gift for men, Roy Ditelezieg writes about jewelry and men’s accessories, read great advice on shopping for Sterling Silver Money Clip at the money clip site

Adrien Brody - Zero to Hero

Friday, February 29th, 2008

One of the least typecast actors in Hollywood, Adrien Brody — star of the new period biopic Hollywoodland — has defied critics by choosing a wide range of roles on the basis that they “look like fun”. This approach has taken him from the most serious role imaginable, as a Polish Jew in Roman Polanski’s The Pianist, to portraying Jack Driscoll in Peter Jackson’s big budget adventure King Kong.

Despite Brody’s seemingly overnight success in The Pianist — a role that made him the youngest actor to win the Oscar for Best Actor — he had actually been struggling to make a name for himself since he appeared in Steven Soderbergh’s 1993 movie King of the Hill. He went on to receive praise for his turns in The Thin Red Line and Summer of Sam, but wasn’t widely noticed until the success of The Pianist.

Since his Oscar success, however, Brody’s movies — with the exception of M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village — have tended to underperform at the box office. His 2005 psychological thriller The Jacket made only $15million at the worldwide box office, barely half of its $28million budget. Even the blockbuster King Kong failed to live up to expectations. In fact, his only success since The Pianist came from Esquire Magazine, who voted him Best Dressed Man in America 2004.

All this may be set to change, though, with the release of Hollywoodland, Brody’s crime drama/biopic of Louis Simo, the detective investigating the suspicious death of TV’s Superman, George Reeves, in 1959. Including Brody himself, the movie boasts two Oscar winners and two nominees — Ben Affleck, Bob Hoskins and Diane Lane. Such star power, combined with reports that Hollywoodland was described before production began as “one of the best scripts unproduced”, will have Brody hoping to return to our good graces and box office success. Will it work? Well, we’ll have to wait and see.
