Leonardo da Vinci: Leonardo’s Animals Part 2 (of 2)

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Leonardo is known to have kept horses, along with dogs, cats and other animals. Although numerous animal studies are found throughout Leonardo’s drawings, his most frequent animal sketches are of horses. His renderings are extremely detailed and life-like. He infused his renditions of animals with nobility - a characteristic that stemmed from his deep love and respect for the animals he sketched and painted.

In the mid 1480s, Leonardo moved from Florence to Milan. At that time, Milan was one of the most powerful city-states in Northern Italy. And, it’s Duke, Ludovico Sforza, commissioned Leonardo to make a horse like no other to honor the Duke’s father, Francesco Sforzo. It was to be a massive, bronze-cast statue - the largest statue ever built, standing 24 feet high.

Leonardo made a great number of preparatory drawings for his Sforza Horse. His notebooks are filled with proportional studies of horses. There are detailed diagrams of the anatomy of horses, along with notes on how to cast it, and it would weigh 80 tons once complete! Leonardo made the clay model to scale, but the bronze horse was not to be. In 1499, the French army threatened an attack. The metal intended for the Sforza Horse would be needed to make canons. Leonardo left Milan before the French Army marched on the city. Seeing the massive clay horse, the French soldiers could not resist using it for target practice.Thereafter it was reduced to rubble. Leonardo became despondent and at the same time, vowed to one day see his horse completely built.

Much has been written throughout history about the Horse that Never Was . Five hundred years after the destruction of the clay model, based on the notes and sketches of Leonardo, the 24-foot bronze horse was cast. In fact, two full-scale statues were completed. One stands in Michigan, while the other was given as a gift to the City of Milan. United Airline Pilot Charles Dent made it happen. Upon seeing the original sketches that had been rediscovered in Spain, he started the process of raising the necessary funds to build the full-scale, bronze horse. His plan was to give it as a gift to the Italians from the Americans. Being something of a sculptor himself, he built a clay model of the horse to Leonardo’s specifications. And, although Charles Dent died in 1994, his dream lived on and over four-million dollars was raised. On September 10th, 1999, exactly 500 years after the French destroyed Leonardo’s clay model, the bronze statue was unveiled in Milan. On October 7th, 1999, a second casting of the horse was unveiled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This second horse is known as the American Horse.

Along with his sudies of mammals, Leonardo made hundreds of bird sketches. In the medieval publication Lives of Artists, Giorgio Vasari tells how Leonardo would go to the markets and buy caged birds, and then open their cages, giving them back their freedom.(1) Leonardo studied the motion of their wings in flight as well as their anatomy and physiology. He wrote down and illustrated his own theories on the flight of birds and was inspired to make several sketches of mechanical flying machines. He wrote a treatise called Codex on The Flight of Birds in which he made diagrams of a helical wing, beating wings, a parachute, and bat wings. Later he realized the problems with human-powered propulsion and began making notes and diagrams of gliders. He also designed a machine based on a helical screw that was 32 or 33 feet in diameter.(2) It was supposed to lift off and fly as the blade rotated, resembling a modern-day helicopter.

Leonardo’s passionate interest in studying animals was unique for his time. He studied and observed animals, and sketched and painted them with grace and realism. Other Renaissance artists like Michelangelo (1475-1564) and Raphael (1483-1520), who focused more on the humanity and divinity in art, did not include animals in their works to the extent as Leonardo did.(3) Without neglecting the Divine in Humanity, Leonardo above all other Renaissance artists, elevated all of nature and made it part of the Divine.

Bad Credit Unsecured Loan- Despite, Financial Respite

Monday, April 28th, 2008

It is the changing nature of man that he is susceptible to forget things in between. It happens more often than not, of taking various loans as per ones requirements; the man defers repayments due to lacking financial planning. Or, there are some who wish not to place any thing, still for availing a loan. For, the lending authority has configured a bad credit unsecured loan. This loan is offered without any sort of security placing.

Individuals having adverse credit history i.e., CCJs, IVAs, bankrupts, arrears, and defaulters attest special attention to the bad credit unsecured loan. Although, provisioning contains credit evaluation and borrowers’ repayment capacity and capability, owing to many lenders in money market for this loan gives a good attention to has shortened the processing time of the bad credit unsecured loan.

Amount raised by the lending authority under the bad credit unsecured loan is a minimum of ?3, 000; this amount can be further increased up to ?25, 000 too at best. The benefits of these loan amount borrowers get a period from 5 to 10 years.

This sanctioned amount is invested into various purposes of an individual. Renovation and improvement at home, children’s higher education, infrastructural development at businesses etc., are some of the benefits of the bad credit unsecured loan. More so, an act of debt consolidation under the bad credit unsecured loan too, is one of the best debt management a solution comes within the parameters of this loan.

In order to cover up the insurance of the bad credit unsecured loan, lenders charge a bit higher to other loans, as no collateral has been placed as of borrowers’ security. Lenders do not ask borrowers to offer any asset as security against bad credit unsecured loan offered. Lenders rely on borrowers’ profile, evaluate through information such as employment history, income level, recommendations, final payment of any previous loans etc. however, if a borrower defaults on a bad credit unsecured loan, the lender has no priority claim against any particular property of the borrower. The lender can try to obtain just a money judgement against the borrower. In such loans, the risk element is the highest for the lenders. Such lenders compensate their increased risk by offering lower amount and by charging a little higher interest. Lenders provide bad credit unsecured loan financial respite despite borrowers’ adversity of bad credits.

Sales Pitch Writing - Is the Standard of Your Web Content Affecting Sales?

Monday, April 28th, 2008

There are lots of resources out there for web designers; just do a web search and you’ll find all manner of tools and guidance to help get your website up, running and looking professional.

One area that many webmasters forget or don’t realise that they need to be aware of is the standard of their written content in terms of language, punctuation and grammar.

Many web sites are sales oriented and so the standard of written content becomes crucial to the success of the sales pitch. Getting writing advice is easy on the internet.

Firstly, you’ll need to structure and draft your sales pitch. Make an outline of the main areas you want to cover and the points you feel you need to make. Draft each area in turn and make sure they fit together as a cohesive pitch. There are many places to get advice on how to structure and write sales proposals. This article doesn’t focus on sales pitches but on ensuring that the quality of writing reflects well on you and your business.

Once you have drafted your sales pitch, remember to check it thoroughly. Leave it to the side and do something else, for at least 2 to 3 hours, preferably a day or two. If you try to check it too soon after drafting it, you will not find the errors that will undoubtedly be there. There are many websites out there that give in-depth advice on how to do this, like www.freewritingadvice.com http://www.freewritingadvice.com ( www.freewritingadvice.com/index_files/editrev.htm http://www.freewritingadvice.com/index_files/editrev.htm ).

For sales websites especially, you should ensure that your spelling is perfect. Spelling mistakes look unprofessional and if your web page looks unprofessional, why would someone pay you for a product or service which may turn out to be equally unprofessional? True or not, that’s the perception you will be giving.

Look closely at the language you have used. Is it ambiguous? Could it be interpreted in more than one way? Is it misleading? If so, reword it. If you can remove the need for a potential customer to need to clarify a point, you stand a better chance of making a sale right away.

Look for areas where you could be more concise and where redundant words could be removed. This makes your text more readable and reduces the readers’ ability to misinterpret what you’ve written. This will also cut down on after sales queries as the customer should be clear about what they are buying in the first place.

Make sure that any facts you are relying upon are correct. Remember that information gained from websites is not always reliable. Since the internet is largely unregulated, it pays to cross-check, or corroborate facts, in more than one place before using them for your website.

Don’t fall into the trap of publishing your web content without checking it. While there are positive advantages to being able to publish quickly to the web, the disadvantages of putting badly written web pages in front of potential customers far outweighs them.

How To Walk Humans

Monday, April 28th, 2008

The problem with many dogs nowadays is that they forget that a human is not just for Christmas, it is for life. Shortly after being born, many puppies (with the naivety and inexperience of youth, I must add) impulse buy a human. They seem to think that owning humans will be all play, forgetting that the first few months are the hardest and that they’ll have to work like a…hard worker.

This essential guide will help you through those first months and hopefully, provide all first-time people buyers with some invaluable insight into the bizarre workings of the human mind.

1. Entering the house. Once you walk into the “house” (an over-sized kennel), mark your territory immediately. Ideal locations for doing this include any expensive looking rugs or elderly relatives that are lying around. If the humans yell at you, do it again. It is important that you let them know who is boss.

2. Make yourself at home. Humans love home improvement, so try to add a bit of yourself to the house by altering the furniture. This is very easy to do, just nibble off the corner of a coffee table or scratch a door to pieces. Don’t be afraid to use your imagination and try something new; my personal favourite is moving lots of human food from the inside of their fridge to the adjacent floor. When the humans discover your work, make sure you sit next to it and wag your tail so that they realise whom to accredit the alterations to. If they become over excited, mark your territory.

3. Avoiding danger. Shortly after you have settled in your new home, many humans will come to visit you. However, you need to be careful as you will inevitably encounter “Children” (mini humans; remember, the smaller the human, the more dangerous they are). Many children will insist on attacking you; they’ll either rapidly tap you on the head or scratch your ear. This may be painful, or even just plain annoying, but please, please do not run away. Stay still (perhaps wag your tail as a sign of impatience) and pray that the mini-humans will lose interest. If you do attempt escape, the children will rapidly pursue you. Indeed, nature knows no worse predator than a determined mini-human. Upon cornering you, the children will awkwardly hoist you in the air and scratch/tap you some more. For emergency escape, mark your territory. The child will quickly abandon you. (This is not strictly true, the smallest mini-humans, the variety referred to as “Bairns”, “Babies” or “Li’l Tykes” will probably mark their territory as well and then continue harassing you. Whimper to let them know that they have won and they will hopefully abandon you)

4. New Tricks: The older you get, the harder these are to learn, but humans will try to teach you certain performance pieces. They will often spend seven laborious hours with you (one in human time) getting you to act like them for various delicious rewards. Remember: the more you fail, the bigger the reward. It is imperative that you let the humans know that you will only perform for them if they pay you with treats. The famous actress Lassie infamously forgot this golden rule. Apparently, she started off performing tricks such as “sit” without edible rewards, and before long was rescuing mini-humans from mine shafts for little more than an affectionate pat on the head.

5. Exercise: Take your humans for walks regularly. Humans are notoriously lazy so will need much encouragement. When walking, you will have your humans on a “lead” (a cable designed to enable dogs to tow and guide their humans to various destinations). The humans will frequently pull on this lead and slow you down, but you must not let them walk at a normal pace; they will not get proper exercise if they go too slowly.

Once you are off the lead, you must protect your humans from any passing cats or cyclists. Furthermore, many humans suffer from acute amnesia in open spaces. Indeed, they very often drop a ball or a stick on the walk, which you have to return to them. Moments later, they will drop the object again. Make sure you are patient and bring the discarded object back to them each time, otherwise they will forget it.

When you return to the house, demonstrate that you realise that you are home by marking your territory.

6. Conversational English: Here are a collection of human phrases that you will find useful (do not repeat them, humans find it disturbing if their canine owners talk back to them in the same language).

Sit! - Take the weight off your feet and rest on your haunches.

Dinner!- I have poured some dry, meat flavour biscuits into a bowl. Please try it. Din-dins!

Walkies!- Please take me outside.

Good Boy/Girl - Congratulations are in order.

Using Fish Tank Accessories To Beautify Your Fish Tank

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Did you know that you can make your fish tank beautiful by using fish tank accessories? Regardless of the size of your fish tank, there are fish tank accessories available for your kind of tank and your budget. If you have a large fish tank, you can make it even more appealing by adding fish tank accessories to it. These fish tank accessories help enhance the beauty of your fish. You may be pleasantly surprised to know that fish tank accessories do not require a lot of money. In fact, there are fish tanks that already come with accessories already built in.

If your fish tank holds 10 gallons of water or more, install fish tank accessories such as a water pump and an air filter. A water pump keep the water in the tank moving continuously and freely. In addition, with a water pump, you won’t have to change the water too often. The air filter, on the other hand, will supply the water with oxygen.

Depending on where you live and how the temperature changes where you live, a heater and water thermometer are two more fish tank accessories that you may need to purchase. A heater is an essential fish tank accessory as it will help keep the temperature in the tank constant. Regulating the water temperature is important to keeping your fish alive; too high or too cool a temperature will kill your fish. A water thermometer will help you monitor the water temperature to ensure that your fish is safe.

You can further beautify your fish tank by adding lights. Keep in mind, though, when you are shopping for fish tank accessories that these items come in standard sizes so you want to pick the ones that are appropriate for the size of your fish tank. In case you have a very large fish tank, you may have to check into having some fish tank accessories customized.

Installing fish tank accessories like a water pump, air filter, heater and water temperature does not imply that you should stop taking an active part in taking care of your fish. You still need to keep a close watch over your fish and make sure that the fish tank is regularly cleaned and maintained. This is the only way you can be sure that your fish stay healthy and alive.

Dyson DC15 Animal BALL Vacuum

One of the best vacuums we’ve used!
ReviewsReviewsReviewsReviewsReviews

Description:

Specifically designed with pets in mind, the Dyson DC15 Ball Animal upright vacuum model combines the very latest technologies from Dyson to deliver what is perhaps the most maneuverable and effective vacuum cleaner in the world today. It glides on a revolutionary ball roller design, and it features Dyson’s famous mini turbine head attachment for tackling the toughest pet hair problems.

Ordinary uprights are unwieldy and difficult to turn, but The Ball twists and turns with a simple turn of your wrist, so you can clean around furniture with less effort.

The motor is mounted inside The Ball, which keeps the center of gravity low and the machine light in your hand so it’s easy to steer. The rubber tires on the ball prevent slipping.

Traditional uprights can be heavy, unwieldy and difficult to steer, making cleaning your home something of a workout.

The designers and engineers at Dyson looked at how people vacuum with an upright, and they noticed that to make the cleaner change direction, your body has to change direction too. This requires your full weight and strength to maintain momentum in the turn, leading to aching arms, back and of course less efficient cleaning - often tight corners and awkward spaces are missed.

Our Review:

When the Animal Ball vacuum arrived my wife was excited to get it out of the package and put it through its paces! She had been using the DC14 Animal vacuum previously and because she still had that vacuum, she was able to compare them side-by-side:

Dyson DC15 BALL Animal Vacuum”The DC15 Animal Ball vacuum is one of the most fascinating vacuums I have ever seen! Like something from a science fiction movie!

It has the same attachments and add-ons that the DC14 Animal comes with (although the attachments are not compatible between the DC14 & DC15 product lines, with the exception of the mini-turbo tool).

The suction seemed stronger on the DC15 Animal Ball and the see-through polycarbonate cover allows me to see the motorized beater bar, this is useful for seeing when the beater bar needs to be cleared of strings, hair, etc., that always get wrapped around the bar.

I loved the low profile vacuum head of the DC15 Ball vacuum because it does reach places the DC14 Animal doesn’t. I have hard floors next to my counters and I was never able to vacuum the 3 inches underneath them where all the food and junk collects (I always had to sweep manually after vacuuming before), so the DC15 Ball gets high marks for that feature!

The DC15 Animal Ball vacuum is somewhat quieter than the DC14 Animal, and switching from carpets to hard floors is as easy as pushing a button right next to the power button to disengage the beater bar.

The most noticeable difference between the two vacuums, because of the design of the Ball vacuum, is the amount of pressure brought to bear on the wrist when maneuvering the vacuum. As you know, the Ball vacuum rolls along on a ball (the actual motor is contained within the ball, keeping your center of gravity low) While it certainly does “turn on a dime”, you will find that this is a completely new experience and sensation in vacuuming, and takes a little getting used to. Your wrist motion is what controls the vacuum, and it takes a fairly strong wrist to maneuver this vacuum (my husband didn’t notice this at all, but he does have stronger wrists than me).

I found my wrist a little fatigued after my initial use of the Animal Ball vacuum, but once I got the hang of how it operates; the subsequent vacuuming sessions were progressively easier for me.

I love the DC14 Animal vacuum, and I really liked the maneuverability of the DC15 Animal Ball vacuum as well. The Ball vacuum is so unique that initially I preferred the DC14 Animal because of what I had become used to.

It’s hard to say that one vacuum is better than another as they each serve a purpose at a particular price point; the DC15 Animal Ball costs over $100 more than the DC14 Animal. Both of them are great at cleaning carpets, rugs, hard floors and have an indispensable mini-turbine tool that cleans animal hair off your couches, beds, etc. I did like the better suction, the ease of disabling the beater bar, and after a short trial, the agility of the DC15 Animal Ball over the DC14 Animal. But I liked (strictly a personal preference) the traditional vacuuming motion that the DC14 Animal provides a little better (I guess some habits are hard to change)!

Both vacuums have great HEPA filters (which actually left the air smelling “cleaner” as I vacuumed). And after having owned a $1,600 Kirby, and various other “big brand” vacuums, I can definitely say that the Dyson vacuums are by far my favorite (they remove MUCH more dirt than any of my previous vacuums, and give you proof of it in the see-through canister you get to empty after each vacuuming session)!”

Could You Use A Personal Injury Attorney?

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Have you got a case? Do you know when you need a personal injury attorney?

Most people assume you only need a personal injury attorney for a auto accident. Clearly, when you have an auto accident that results in an injury to yourself caused by others then hiring a personal injury attorney would be prudent, but there are many instances when a personal injury attorney may be of use to you for all sorts of accidents caused by others.

The key question when assessing whether you need to hire an attorney regarding a claim is “has there been negligence caused by another?” If there has been no negligence, intentional or otherwise, then there can be no claim. For instance, as you walk down the sidewalk your toe catches on a loose paving slab. You fall and break your wrist. In this instance the persons or authority charged with maintaining the sidewalk is negligent for letting the sidewalk fall into dangerous disrepair. If, however on your walk about town, you trip on a sidewalk for no reason other than your own clumsiness and break your wrist only you are responsible. The side walk is in good working order only you are negligent for not taking more care.

There are many instances when a personal injury claim may be made, not only car accidents and slips on sidewalks. Workplace accidents, construction accidents, fires, floods, poisoning, drug overdoses, animal bites, being robbed or mugged, medical malpractice, airplane/bus/train accidents and even legal malpractice may entitle you to a personal injury claim.

Even accidents you may have had in the past may be worth assessing with a personal injury attorney. Often when you consider who was at fault for your accident you may point the finger of suspicion in one direction, but a well chosen personal injury attorney may be able to highlight several parties at fault for the incident.

So how do you choose a personal injury attorney to represent you? Well, first off select a few from your local area to interview over the telephone. Ask each how many personal injury cases they have tried in front of a jury, the type of experts they have had to hire for clients, whether they have handled cases similar to yours and what results did they achieve, whether they willing to advance the expense of the litigation and what percentage of their income is derived from personal injury cases. Answers to these questions should help you to make a good choice of attorney from your selection.

The Benefits Of Student Exchanges

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Maybe you’ve considered travel. I used to think that I would travel when I was done school. Then, it occurred to me: there’s no time like the present. Going on exchange was the best thing that I could have done. Here are a few reasons that studying abroad is great:

1. It’s cheaper.

When you travel as a student, it is often cheaper than traveling later in life. There are a few reasons why: you can get great student discounts (get an ISIC card: an International Student Identification Card), you don’t mind staying in hostels, and sometimes the school will help you pay.

2. It’s more organized.

If you have been scared to travel because you don’t want to do all the paperwork of getting a passport, a visa, and you don’t know how to book a flight, don’t worry. If you go on an exchange through school, your school will help you with all of the international paperwork. They can answer all your questions. You might not have a lot of experience traveling: they have a lot of experience sending students on exchange. Don’t be afraid to benefit from their experience.

3. It’s the real experience.

Often when people travel, they take cruises or tours. As much fun as a Contiki tour is, you will probably never get to know any of the places that you visit. You would only hang out with your friends who you came with. If you go on exchange, instead of staying at each place for only a day or so, you get to stay for a few months, or even a year. This means that you will really get the feel for your destination. You will make friends with people who are locals. You will have enough time to really absorb the new culture.

4. It’s a rewarding (and awarding) time.

You can get certain awards, prizes, and fellowships for studying abroad. You can even get some when you return from your trip. If you are worried that you won’t be able to pay for your trip, find out about some internationalist awards that you can win, and take the time to apply. There are also special loans for students who plan on studying abroad.

5. It’s more fun to learn.

When you go on exchange, you will take courses at another high school or college. Yes, there will be school. But the real learning that you do when you are on exchange is not done in the classroom. You will learn things at school, but you will be amazed at how much you learn when you are just having fun. Go sightseeing, see everything you can see. Sign up for field trips and get out there. You’ll remember more about your art history if you go see the Sistine Chapel!

If you are going to a country where English isn’t the primary language, now is the time to learn that language. Take some courses (even buy some tapes) before you go. Don’t be afraid to make a mistake in that language. Just practicing will help you improve. You will find your trip is more rewarding if you make the effort to learn a second language. (Be careful: often when people find out that you are an exchange student, they will want to practice their English with you. However, you can politely explain that you are here to practice their language and they will often understand).

6. It helps you learn about yourself.

You might think that you have traveled to another country to learn about that country. But you will find that you also learn more about your country when you travel because you will start comparing your culture to another culture. When other people ask you questions about your country, you might learn new things about your history, geography, and politics. You will come back to America knowing more about who you are and where you come from.

7. It looks great on a resume.

In the end, after you have traveled the world, seen all the sights, and come back a better person, you will be able to put this exchange on your resume. You will be able to explain your experience for jobs, future education, and other positions that you apply for.

8. It’s easy to finance.

If you are concerned about financing your exchange, don’t worry. You can get special loans to help you. Check out the link below.
