Russian Superstitions

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Russians are very superstitious people. They will deny this, but it is true. These superstitions affect my life on a daily basis. Most of the time they are harmless and I go along with them to humor my wife. Sometimes I tease her about them.

New superstitions pop up all the time, as new situations arise in our life. I keep telling her that I need a rulebook for them. Perhaps someday I will codify them in a book.

Russians are raised with these superstitions so they have no need to consult a manual.

Here are some of them. It is by no means an exhaustive list:

1) You can’t whistle in the house or car, as they believe that you are whistling away your money.

At a dinner party at our house, a friend of mine started whistling. My wife silenced him immediately. She explained to him, “You can whistle in your own house, but you can’t whistle in mine. In my house, it’s my money you are whistling away.”

When she first came to America, she would see people standing at intersections holding signs. She asked me what they were doing. I told her they were asking for money. She asked me why. I told her that they had done entirely too much whistling in their house for their own good.

2) If you step on your spouse’s shoe by accident, you have to let the other person step on your shoe, or you will have an argument.

I never tested this superstition. It seemed easier to go along with the remedy than pay the price for violating it.

3) If you leave your house, you cannot go back inside for something you have forgotten, or your trip will result in ‘nothing good,’ as my wife says.

4) If you must go back in to get the forgotten item, you can try to mitigate the bad effects of returning by looking into the mirror at your own reflection for a moment before you leave again.

5) Never demonstrate another’s surgery or wound on your own body with your hand or other means as you are likely to visit that upon yourself.

In the few times I have done this, my wife has tried to remedy this by wiping away the spot where I made the imaginary incision with her hand, blowing on her hand to blow it away to the wind, and covering it with the sign of the cross.

6) Never give a Russian woman an even number of flowers. Even numbers are for the dead. Always give odd numbers. When you order a dozen, or two dozen roses, for her, ask them to throw in an extra one for good luck.

7) Never give yellow flowers to a Russian woman. It signifies infidelity and may mean that your relationship will not last.

8) Never give a watch as a gift to a Russian woman. Time is running out on your relationship.

9) Never give knives or handkerchiefs as gifts. I don’t know the reason for this one.

10) Never celebrate a birthday early. You are pushing your luck.

11) Don’t show your newborn baby to strangers until after forty days. They are waiting for their soul to arrive and they may take on another’s soul or energy during that time.

12) It’s best to cut your hair or nails during a full moon.

13) It’s considered bad luck to shave or cut your hair when a family member is in danger or bad health.

14) Whenever someone praises you or offers a positive comment, you knock on wood or imaginarily spit three times over your left shoulder so that you are not jinxed by the comment.

15) Do not shake hands or kiss over the threshold of a door. It forms a bridge that allows the devil or evil spirits from the outside to enter the house this way. When I have done this by mistake, my wife usually pushes me back outside or pulls me inside before greeting me with a kiss at the front door.

16) Before anyone takes a long trip, the whole family sits together silently for a few minutes before the traveler leaves.

17) The truly superstitious have been known to eat ‘lucky’ bus tickets, when the sum of the left three numbers equals the sum of the three numbers on the right.

18) Recently, while preparing to give my infant daughter a bath, the little tyke peed on me while I was taking her clothes off. My wife laughed and said that it was good news. It meant that I would live to dance at my daughter’s wedding!

This list is not exhaustive by any means. Superstitions vary by country and locale. There is a popular Russian television show that travels around the country exploring the unique superstitions of each particular town or village.

Many of the superstitions came from folk tales or fairy stories, Russian Orthodox tradition, or had peasant or agricultural roots. Most Russians are only one or two generations from the farm or village.

At any rate, be aware of the superstitions and try to show some respect for them whether or not you believe in them. Your Russian friends will appreciate it.

Five Money Saving Tips When Selling Your Home

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Your home is undoubtedly the most valuable asset for the vast majority of us and selling it will cost thousands. Using the money saving tips in this article should reduce the cost of moving home.

Estate Agent fees vary, so shopping around and don’t forget to haggle and pay one off against the other. You should aim for 1% commission, also push then to limit the tie-in period to no more than 6 weeks, this gives then enough time to sell the house, but if they can’t you can move to another agent without going “multi-agent” which will increase the fee to about 3%+, a big no-no! Ensure you get a fair valuation, never tell an estate agent what other agencies have valued your house at. They will use this to manipulate its offer, often resulting in wide distortions.

It is false economy to go for the cheapest solicitors, so get recommendations from all the estate agents you speak to and remember to ask for the name of specific people, rather than just the legal firms. Give them a call and ask what their charges are, also note whether they are they friendly, helpful, and most important efficient? Fees are negotiable so haggle! Play off each one against the other to get yourself the best service at the best price.

Selling you house privately can save thousands. One in twenty vendors are now taking the DIY route which could save you thousands. That is a massive money saving tip, but there are a couple of downsides, basically “time and effort”. You could consider newspaper advertising, flyers and signs. Newspapers usually charge per line or per word so try to keep your advert as brief as possible without making it uninteresting. The simplest way would to sell your house yourself is to use one of the many online house selling service.

Obviously it is best to sell your house when the market is strong and demand is high, so keep an eye on the local property market. Generally, the market tends to be stronger in early and late summer than the rest of the year, so aim to sell your house then. Also avoid completing with your neighbours so if there are already a few “For Sale” signs on your street, it might be better to wait a bit.

Research has shown that a poor presented house can take longer to sell and may reduce the price by thousands. So get your paint brushes out, give your home a lick of paint and finish all of those DIY jobs which are outstanding. Also talk to the estate agent about adding value to your property it maybe worth spending a bit of cash to make some more. However, be careful not to over spend, you might not get your money back, so talk all planned improvements through with your estate agent.

If you are determined to save money when selling your home, do some more research, as they say knowledge is power. Websites such as Moneysavingexpert.com specialise in offering money saving tips, a brief browse around such sites will allow you to get all the information you need to save you a ton of money.

Quick And Easy Facts To Enrich Vitamin Information

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Let’s see: all you know about vitamins are that they’re good for the body, and that you can either obtain them from eating foods rich in vitamins or by taking supplements. That’s correct in a sense, but what you know is far from being able to paint the whole picture about vitamins. If you want to get healthy and fit, you have to update the vitamin information database inside your head and live accordingly.

The Definition and Function of Vitamins

Medically speaking, vitamin is made up of two words: vital amine, and it is an organic substance or compound which has a catalytic function in causing certain essential chemical reactions in the body. In simpler terms, vitamins make good things happen inside the body more quickly and with less energy spent. Without vitamins, the human body has a hard time making those reactions happen, and this could result to a partial or total breakdown of the whole system.

Types of Vitamins

Fat Soluble - There are four vitamins that fall under this category and they are vitamins A, D, E, and K. All four vitamins are stored in reserve inside the liver and the body’s fatty tissues. They are released when they need to perform a special rescue function for the body.

Water Soluble - These are external vitamins that enter the body when it consumes fruits and vegetable, both of which these vitamins can be found. The various sub-vitamins under Vitamin B as well as Vitamin C all belong to this group. These vitamins are distributed throughout in the body. Excesses are flushed out through urine, but vitamin B12, which includes cobalamin, biotin, folic acid, and pantothenic acid, continue to stay inside the liver.

Planning for a Vitamin-Rich Diet

The following foods are what you have to eat if you wish for a vitamin-rich diet:

Vitamin A - Known as the vitamin that greatly enhances your eyesight (vision and color-wise), Vitamin A has other special functions like aiding physical growth - which is critical during your childhood to teenage years - and helping you to have and maintain glowing skin. Vitamin A can be found in foods like milk, carrots, and spinach.

Vitamin B - The largest group of vitamins, Vitamin B, facilitates your body’s metabolism. It also boosts your energy levels and help in the production of red blood cells (RBC). Vitamin B can be found also in milk (now you know why you have to drink plenty glasses of milk in the past), oranges, beans, leafy greens, whole grain bread, and even seafood.

Vitamin C - If you have a lot of Vitamin C in your body, don’t be surprised when your wounds and illnesses heal more quickly than most because that’s just one of the functions it performs. Oranges are the most popular provider of Vitamin C, but you can also get it from eating strawberries and broccoli.

Vitamin D - This vitamin is the partner of calcium in helping your bones - and teeth - stay healthy and strong. It can be found in fish, egg yolks, and surprise, surprise, milk as well!

Vitamin E - This particular vitamin is important for everyone because it keeps the tissues in your sensory organs as well as in other parts of the body healthy and strong. Like Vitamin B, it helps in the production of RBCs. Vitamin E can be found in certain vegetables as well as sardines and whole wheat breads.

Vitamin K - Lastly, Vitamin K is what helps your blood to clot together every time you get a wound. It can be found in pork and yes, milk.

High Definition DVD - The Format War’s Second Act

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Once again, there is a technology format war looming on the horizon. Many people don’t remember the VHS - Betamax battle that broke out when video players were first introduced, making it possible for people to watch movies at home. This was a case of two non-compatible technologies, each of which was a format for taping full length feature films. Ultimately VHS won out, and the movie companies put out their products in that format - thus dooming Betamax and the product manufacturers that had adopted their technology, not to mention the thousands of consumers that had invested in Betamax players. We now find ourselves on the verge of creating a new set of sore losers.

Skirmishes over LCD versus plasma screen HD TV technology are ongoing, but that type of technology contest isn’t as acute because you can watch TV or a movie on either type of screen. Currently, you can also play every DVD available on any DVD player that is in production and on the market. The next generation of DVD players, however, is coming over the horizon in the form of two distinct and incompatible technologies.

Toshiba versus Sony

Toshiba has developed a proprietary technology dubbed high definition DVD (HDDVD) and to support their format has developed alliances with Microsoft and Universal Films, among others. The HDDVD disks will be available in 15GB and two sided, 30GB versions.

By way of comparison, the current DVDs have enough storage for two hours of standard definition (SD) images, while the one-sided 15 gigabyte HDDVD disk can store up to eight hours of high definition (HD) images. The difference between SD and HD is simply twice the number of pixel lines displayed on the screen in the HD format, thus providing a crisper picture. The increased capacity of these disks will also allow for interactive features such as screen-in-screen director’s discussion of movie scenes playing behind him that today’s standard DVDs cannot support.

In the other corner is the Blu-Ray technology developed by Sony, who has lined up support from Apple, Disney and 20th Century Fox. Both formats use blue laser technology, which has a shorter wavelength than red, allowing it to read the smaller digital data spots packed a lot more densely onto a standard-size disc. Blu-Ray disks are designed to carry up to 50GB of digital material, which may mean that Sony wins the compression competition.

The Early Rounds

Sony Pictures released the first six films on Blu-Ray disks in June of this year, and have released a few more since. Samsung has a Blu-Ray DVD player in the stores, while Sony’s hardware division has released a Blu-Ray compatible PC. Toshiba has its initial HDDVD player on the market and there are a limited number of titles available in the format, mostly re-releases of previous first-run features.

Sony clearly jumped out to an early lead, with support from Dell, HP, Mitsubishi and a number of other hardware manufacturers. In addition, Sony Pictures also owns Columbia and MGM, giving them an enormous library to work with. Sony will also fold its technology into the PlayStation 3 gaming machine, their proprietary product whose 2nd version rules the roost in the videogame market.

On the Toshiba side of the battlefield, proponents argue that the HDDVD disks will be cheaper to produce and that it will be comparatively easy for disk replicators to retrofit their equipment for production purposes. The HDDVD format also makes production of recordable DVDs much simpler than with the Blu-Ray design.

Further, an alliance with Microsoft will be a formidable edge in this battle, should it turn into a protracted conflict. Microsoft’s operating systems are going to be important cogs in the development of future home viewing systems, as the technology moves closer to merging the functions of computers and televisions. If movie downloads become a commercial success, PC compatibility will be critical for these disks.

The Consumer Issues

One of the reasons that Microsoft aligned with Toshiba’s technology is that HDDVD provides for “mandatory managed copy.” What that means is that unlike with today’s conventional DVDs, managed copy allows consumers to make legitimate copies of their HD movies and enjoy this content around the home or across their personal networks. Making this feature mandatory will ensure a consistent consumer experience across all next-generation DVD content.

Then there is the element of iHD, which is the concept of maximizing high definition video for transport across the internet. This is a specific set of video specs which the iHD.org, a group of tech and media companies, is pushing as a cross-platform standard.

The theory is that next-generation HD movies will provide a level of interactive experience well beyond that of today’s conventional DVDs. iHD technology is meant to provide a broad foundation to enable new interactivity with standards-based development tools and technologies.

The pitch for this standard is that it will provide consumers with enhanced content, navigation and functionality for HD films. The business reality is that Microsoft plans to implement iHD support in its Windows Vista operating system, which will not only be a significant step towards integrated video and computer systems but will make help drive adoption of the new Microsoft platform.

Duel to the Death Unlikely

There is some indication that all of these conflicting issues may ultimately force a compromise - some sort of merger or unification of the two technologies. Hardware manufacturers are hedging their bets, with the latest wrinkle being that Blu-Ray-aligned Hewlett Packard has requested that mandatory managed copy and the iHD standard be included in Blu-Ray’s feature set. Sony has agreed to include the managed copy feature, but said no to iHD.

The Betamax - VHS battle was a tussle over hardware with the movie companies playing a predominant role, one Sony lost. This time around, there is much more uncertainty about how the next generation of home video will roll out. How will the Web and the PC fit in? Will the movies be delivered via disk or via download? How will the film industry protect its content rights and how can the hardware companies maximize their role?

PCs have become a commodity. If a scenario arises where every household needs a new computer to match up with new video technology, the Dells and HPs of this world stand to win big. If competing technology keeps people from investing in either, every involved business will suffer. If the film and DVD houses have to produce two sets of content and two disks for every film, their margins will grow considerably thinner as well. The tech bloggers seem to be increasingly inclined to believe that unification of some sort is inevitable. The corporations with the most to lose are too smart not to insist on it.

Computer Networking Business Start-up and Hiring Key Employees

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Hiring employees in the computer networking business is an exact science. Many computer networking business owners don’t have the knowledge required to hire the best and most experienced employees, even though hiring these people is one of the most beneficial factors of business growth. There is a formula to follow that can help you, as a business owner hire the right employees for your computer networking business.

Hiring is a very systematic process, and each computer networking business has to be ready for a very long process. Once you make a list of the most useful candidates for the jobs, the interview process begins. Be prepared to conduct second and even third interviews to ensure you get the right people to help you in your computer networking business.

Classified Ads That Emphasize Opportunity

Job postings for your computer networking business should advertise an opportunity, not simply a job or a position. The words you use to describe the opportunity should reflect the full scope of your company and attract those looking for a career, not just a shorter-term job.

The Job Description

The employees you want will expect a clear description of the job and its responsibilities. In your description, include definitions, expectations, salary, bonuses and all perks.

Honest And Open Reference Conversations

Establish an open and friendly relationship right off the bat with candidate references in order to open up communication. Ask about the applicant’s strengths and weaknesses after you’ve put the reference at ease, and keep in mind that most often a reference is only trying to protect himself when he is guarded with information.

Resumes And Applications

You should demand an applicant fill out completely both an application and a resume. A computer networking business will find out much more about a candidate by expecting both items. Applications provide the answers to important questions regarding felony arrest, citizenship, etc., and make work history easier to determine than a resume alone.

Listening Skills

The ability to listen is a critical skill in the computer networking business, and if a candidate cannot stay focused or truly process what you are saying in an interview, chances are he will not listen as a service-oriented employee.

Following specific guidelines when hiring all employees will guarantee your hires are consistently of the best quality and best fit for your particular computer networking business.

Florence Hotel And Other Accommodations

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Florence is the biggest tourist attraction in the Tuscany region. There are hundreds of hotels in the area, making finding the right Florence hotel fairly easy. The choices range from inexpensive hotels to more extravagant and expensive inns. Much of the city and some of the hotels have a medieval feel that is like stepping back in time. This city was the center of culture in the Renaissance and still retains much of this character.

Florence Hotel and Other Accommodations

Hotels are good for short stays or if you plan to eat out for every meal. If you plan to stay for longer periods, you may want to consider other options. This is also true if you plan to stay in for some meals. Apartments in Florence can be rented for vacations. These have at least a small kitchen, allowing you to stay in for some meals. In addition, an apartment will give you a bit more privacy than most hotels.

If you are travelling with a larger group or family, a country farmhouse holiday may be a good choice. These have larger kitchens for cooking meals and come equipped with everything you need, but food and clothing. This will allow you to cook larger meals and try out authentic Florence Italy recipes. Most are located in more remote areas, so you will need a vehicle for sightseeing. Florence car rental agencies can help with renting a vehicle for your stay.

Although there are many choices in Florence accommodations, hotels tend to fill up quickly, especially in the tourist season. Be sure to book early to get the best possible rates and the hotel you want. The same is true for apartment rentals and villas. July and August are the busiest months. The prices will be highest at this time. Spring, just before the busy season is a good time to visit, if you want to avoid the larger crowds.

Finding and Booking a Florence Hotel

The internet is a great place to start your search for hotels in Florence. You will find pictures of the exterior of the hotel as well as the rooms. Many sites offer reviews of the hotels. Read both professional reviews and those written by guests at each hotel you are considering. This can give you the benefit of the opinion of past guests. Once you have made a decision, you can book your room on the internet.

The internet can also be used for other accommodations in Florence. Larger vacation rental agencies and many smaller agencies have websites with photographs and descriptions of the apartments or villas. You can even book your rental vehicle on the internet in most cases. You may not need a car, if you will be staying only in the city. If you plan to visit the surrounding country areas, you can arrange for your car to be ready when you arrive.

Don’t Let a Piece of Paper Spoil Your Vacation

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

A vacation is one of the most eagerly awaited event on many a calendar. Some save for years to travel to a destination of their dreams. The anticipation is almost as exciting as the vacation itself. But as in all things, if you fail to plan, your vacation may just give you a headache so big before you even step foot on a foreign land.

If you are planning to go on a vacation to a destination off the beaten track, the first and most important thing to find out is whether you need a travel visa for your target country. It may come in the form a piece of paper, a card or just a stamp on your passport. Given the state of heightened security at most airports, it is crucial that you have all travel visa documents in order before you travel.

A travel visa is a document issued by a foreign government giving you permission to enter their country and stay for a designated length of time. There is no international right to travel. Therefore, when you request for a travel visa, you are asking for a privilege and not claiming a right. Each country has the right to determine who they allow into their country, the length of stay and what requirements must be met prior to entry. Determining these requirements is the first step in obtaining a visa. Then prepare your passport as you will need to include your passport for the visa application. You should have a least two blank pages in your passport for each country you intend to visit.

Here are some tips to help you start your vacation on the right track:

? Firstly ask your friends who have visited the country recently.

? Check a current guide book for the country you want to visit. While this is a good starting point, visa requirements can change. Always check with the country’s consulate or representative office for the latest requirements.

? Ask your travel agent. A good travel agent that specializes in international travel should have the latest visa requirement.

? If you are visiting several countries, you may need multiple visas for each country.

? Whenever possible, obtain all your visas before you travel, even if it is possible to get one upon arrival. This will allow you to deal with embassy personnel in your own language and reduce the chance of having to pay additional fees to local immigration officials.

? Even if a visa is not required for entry you may still need one, or other special permissions, to go to the specific area you wish to visit. Make sure you check before you go.

? Most visa applications ask your profession. Some answers, such as missionary, journalist, or unemployed may create problems.
? When asked your reason for entry, always tick holiday or tourism when you are on vacation.
? It’s important whenever possible, book your hotel well ahead and provide the address of where you will stay during your visit.
? When asked your religion be as broad as possible. Christian is a better answer than Evangelical, Lutheran, Baptist, etc.
? Specify the length of your visit. It’s a good idea to add a day or two to your intended departure date in case you have a last minute change of plans to stay longer.
? And last but not least, from my own experience, if your kids are traveling with you, it’s always prudent for them to have their own individual passports and visas.

Some countries may have other entry requirements in addition to a visa. Common requirements include

Battling With Weight Loss

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

This is probably the HOTTEST topic around. Everyone wants to know how they can loose more weight. Yo- Yo diets come and go all the time, people pop pills, try out patches and or starve themselves for awhile and then just go right on binging again putting on more weight. Crash diets just bring about disappointment as more money is wasted and more weight is put back on. So why is it that so many people are battling with this weight epidemic and why are so many people putting on more and more weight as the years go on?

Well this could be a very long and in depth article but we are not going to go into all the “nitty gritty” as to why this happens, the reasons are so many and we could literally be here for days looking into all the whys and how’s of this problem.

The thing I think that needs to be remembered is that there are various reasons for being over weight and yes in some cases obese. According to the National Center for Health Statistics in the United States alone 66.3% of all people are overweight or obese. Now that is a staggering statistic.

Let’s have a quick look at some of the reasons why people battle with weight loss. For so many people it is a constant battle and one they feel they have already lost from the word “go”. Your quality of life is affected when you are over weight and you really don’t feel good about yourself, in fact you feel down right rotten, worthless and just not worth the time of any ones day and so we see how the destructive cycle continues. You comfort eat and just keep putting on more weight leaving you feeling worse about yourself after each and every mouthful. A mouthful that you know you don’t really need but you just can’t stop yourself.

One of the things you certainly do not have control over is if it is a genetic factor that has caused you to put on weight and subsequently battle to loose the weight again. Maybe you have always been bigger than average and due to your bone structure you are “just that way.” Due to these genes your appetite is affected, the rate at which your body metabolizes food and then of course the fat - muscle ratio and how it is distributed in your body plays against you. Don’t get me wrong you may not have control over your DNA make up but you do have control over how you can handle it from here. Knowledge is power and when you are equipped with this power you can make better life style choices. Don’t put unrealistic pressure on yourself, it is not worth it and it makes you feel worse when you don’t reach these unattainable goals. Accept yourself and realize that you are wonderful just the way you are, and yes you may have to watch what you eat and how much of it you do eat and when!

you eat coupled with exercise routines but remember to take a break once in awhile, cheat a bit here and there and then get back to watching what you eat. If you do not allow yourself the odd indulgence here and there, you will be completely miserable and just like any strict diet, give up, over indulge and put on more weight. You need to find that balance that makes your body and your taste buds happy.

Then we have the Thyroid problem. This is not diagnosed often enough. More often than not the possibility is dismissed or just missed as a possible option. The thyroid gland is what is responsible for regulating the bodies’ metabolism, energy, hormones and vitamins. It sits at the base of your throat and is stimulated by the pituitary gland to produce the necessary hormones needed to keep the bodies’ metabolism and energy levels at the noStrermal functioning rate. When you have an under active thyroid you have Hypothyroidism and it tends to affect woman far more than it does men. In this case the thyroid gland does not produce enough of the thyroid hormone and thus it is not effective in regulating the body’s metabolism and use of energy. Some of the signs to look out for are extreme tiredness, weight gain, swelling in the face and in these cases you will find you have particularly puffy eyes. Your hair may be thin, your skin dry and thickened and your menstrual period may b!

e heavier than usual. Constipation and an increased intolerance to cold weather, poor memory, depression and muscle cramps are also signs of probable hypothyroidism. This is normally treated by a daily dose of thyroid hormones; they may be either synthetic or natural hormones to help bring in what your thyroid gland is failing to produce on its own.

Stress is also said to cause weight gain. Now before we all sit back and think that another lecture about comfort food is on its way, let us look at why weight gain happens when under stress. I did an article recently on acne and some of the causes or contributing factors to acne and one of the things that came up is cortisol and how it affects the skin. Well cortisol affects ones weight and, in effect, weight loss too. Cortisol is a hormone that is released in ones body when under stress, hence the reason it has been labeled the “stress hormone”, and it comes about because of the “fight or flight” reaction that gets released in all of us. With regards to weight it is the reason why your body hangs on to weight the way it does.

As already discovered cortisol tends to have many different affects in the body and so one of its functions is to help the body produce blood sugar from proteins. We all know what too much sugar does; it causes fatty deposits in the body. In these instances the fat is generally deposited around the abdomen resulting in the “tire belly”. The best root to go is to have your cortisol levels tested and leave the treatment of it in the hands of your health practitioner. Even though the role of cortisol in weight gain is under some debate a test showed that women who have higher cortisol levels in their body’s have a greater tendency to eat high fat foods than women whose cortisol levels were lower. I don’t think tests are really necessary to prove when women eat more because we all know from personal experiences how and when we indulge ourselves in comfort food. Invariably ones emotional state is not as relaxed and calm as it could be.

Some medications cause weight gain, such as birth control pills, steroids and antidepressants. The best thing to do would be to consult your health practitioner and let him/ her alter your medication to suit your bodies needs and prevent you from continuing to gain excess weight.

I think the biggest contributing factor to weight gain and why people battle so much to loose the unwanted weight is unfortunately lifestyle. There is regrettably no “miracle pill” or “miracle patch” that will just shed away those pounds. We live in a time of convenience and because of this “take aways” and “drive thrus” are becoming our usual place to have a meal. It is the norm rather than the exception to the rule. They tempt us at nearly every street corner, they fill us quicker than any health snack and let’s face it even though the nutritional value on a scale of one to ten is maybe -1, we don’t really care, it tastes good enough and it is easily accessible. Exercise just tends to be too much effort and we don’t always have the time for it either. Diets are just a pain in the neck and who knows what we are really doing to our bodies in the long run with all these pills that go with it? Just as food is used to “deal with” depression, sadness, stress and anxiety it is al!

so used to celebrate and enjoy life. What goes invariably hand in hand when celebrating with food, well alcohol and it is well known that large consumption of alcohol is also responsible for putting on weight around the belly.

At the end of the day we go back to the importance of having a healthy body image. Overweight tends to be subjective and we all put these really unrealistic expectations on ourselves (thanks of course to the media and society) of what we should look like. However on the other hand we should take more notice of how much we may weigh for no other reason other than the health issues that are associated with being over weight. A high Cholesterol level, diabetes, heart failure, respiratory problems and so on is all things to look out for that adversely affect your health when you are over weight.

Sensitivity to various foods may also cause fluid retention and weight gain so have tests done to see if there are foods that don’t react well to your system. Symptoms that will occur shortly after eating that if you are sensitive to that particular food are headaches, indigestion, joint pain, depression, constipation, diarrhea and respiratory problems.

As hard as it may be try not to compromise your eating habits, bypass the “drive thrus”. When feeling stressed as tempting as it may be to hit the food, rather go for a walk or jog to get rid of those feelings of anger and frustration. A punching bag is an unbelievable source of stress release, so maybe look into investing in one of those and go and hit that instead. Exercise is fantastic. I know it is hard to get into exercise but again don’t put unrealistic expectations on yourself when you do. The lack of instant results is what puts us off so often. Drink lots of water, throw away the tempting foods and get into a well balanced diet plan that has been made for you specifically by a Dietician or Health Practitioner. Remember that you want to be healthy for yourself and your family and that way you can put your best step forward from the start.
