Right now I’m feeling very inadequate. You know! It’s that feeling you get when you’ve just let someone down. As Mortgage Professionals we have all experienced it. I just couldn’t help. Here’s the whole agonizing story from the very beginning…

Last Summer, Canadian Kyle MacDonald, an unemployed writer, set off on a quest to turn one red paper clip into a house, by swapping it for items that were bigger or better.

Based on a game called Bigger and Better (I don’t remember that one when I was a kid) that he played as a child, MacDonald decided he would use his creativity and the power of the internet to trade up from one item to another, starting only with one red paperclip, to ultimately trade for his goal…a house.

MacDonald set up a web blog to trade his one red paperclip on July 12th, 2005 and he made his first trade for a pen (in the shape of a fish) on July 14.Well, it took Kyle 14 internet trades, and exactly one year to move from the red paper clip to a house on Main Street in the tiny town of Kipling in Saskatchewan province, Canada - a place he has never been to before.

Kyle’s initial trade swapped the paperclip for a pen in Vancouver, the pen became a doorknob, which was traded for a portable barbecue, then swapped for a generator, to become a full beer keg and neon Budweiser sign in New York. A snowmobile followed which was then traded for a trip to Yahn in the Canadian Rockies? He swapped that for a 1995 Ford Van which was then traded for a recording contract which became one year rent-free in Phoenix. An afternoon with Alice Cooper followed, then a snow globe, a Hollywood movie role in Donna on Demand for a two-storey, three-bedroom, 1920s farmhouse on the town’s Main Street in rural Kipling.

Kyle’s new home community, which is named after the famed British author and poet Rudyard Kipling and is home to New York Times list award-winning romance novelist Mary Balogh, seems like the ideal place to crank out his life’s story, which is scheduled to hit store shelves next summer. He successfully parlayed this whole adventure into a book deal with Random House and a movie deal with DreamWorks.

His book, to be published in four different languages, will contain new material about his bartering experience. He said he was approached by about 40 book publishers and 50 production companies who were interested in his story.

Again, I feel terrible that as a Mortgage Professional, I couldn’t help Kyle secure a home mortgage. Of course, being unemployed didn’t help much. To tell the truth, I really don’t originate mortgages in Canada. Plus, all of my lenders had already reached their quota and all of their free mortgages had already been allocated.

Congratulations Kyle MacDonald on a job well done. Quite a return on investment…one red paperclip for a house. Only in America…well actually, North America!

How detailed is up to you. I tend to think that hourly rates and that kind of intimate detail is wasted. Simply work out how much ahead you are and how much (if anything) you have withdrawn. Of course, if you lose, record that too, no matter how much it hurts.

Don’t forget to record what type of game you’re playing, if that’s important to you. (In my experience, most players stick to what they know and don’t experiment. If all you do is keep up, down and withdrawals, you’re way ahead of most players out there!)

Give yourself realistic goals, such as a ‘dream’ target (new car, holiday or whatever). When you withdraw, add the dollars taken out to your dream counter. The more successful you are, the nearer that dream will get!

Do I ever get tired of giving advice which makes you work harder? Yes. Of course. Who said religion was an easy path to take? But keep following the path and you will become a better, richer poker player!

Yes, I pay a set amount each and every month for my hosting and some of the additional services cost extra but these companies that offer Lifetime Hosting sound like a great money saver. What I don’t understand is where is their incentive to perform each and every month. What if I pay this $100 plus fee and they just shut their company down and I can never find them again.

What about the fact that all they have is a sales page? Nothing deeper than that sales page, no support page, no FAQ page, nothing, nada, zip. With my present host, one of the things that I like, is whenever I call them there is somebody there to answer my call. Their support can be the ticket system, live chat, or phone support which is the one I prefer when I want an answer right then and there.

Just recently, I bought a software product via the WWW using my credit card. The software never came so I disputed the charge. After a month my credit card company sent me an email saying that they found in favor of the merchant because the sale was an intangible product and that I knew the risk before purchasing. So now I am out my $43 what happens when the hosting company takes off with my $100 plus, if I find them will I be able to get my money back?

I try to never buy a product where there is only a sales pages. Sites that don’t have an email address or a phone number very rarely will get my business. I especially hate it when you do a Whois lookup and the registrar comes up as private or a bogus name and info.

I also see that these companies offering lifetime hosting usually offer great disk space and I’ve even seen some of unlimited bandwidth but 2 problems I see here is what if you need more space then what they give you and how many sites out there in the world are using any descent amount of bandwidth. I have 20 different sites and even though it is unfortunate but only 1 of them will ever exceed the use of more than 1Gig of bandwidth. What do I need unlimited bandwidht for?

Why write a book if you don’t want it to bring you fame and fortune? Use these 10 ways to make your book outsell others.

1. Write a non-fiction book. Non-fiction books are 90% of total book sales. It makes sense to write and market non-fiction first. The most popular? How to and self-help books. You can use your profits to partially finance a fiction project.

2. Write a mini book. Mini books in any format, like eBooks, booklets, guides or special reports are faster, easier, and cheaper to write than full length books of 100-300 pages. The can be as short as five pages (special reports), to eBooks that can be 5-100pages (even longer)..

3. Target your book toward women. Women buy far more books than men, about 75%. If your message benefits women, you’ll do well in sales. If it’s a book your audience needs, it will sell more. It’s best to see the need and fill it rather than have an idea- then look for an audience.

4. Keep your book’s image sharp.Image is almost everything. Choose your title with care. Your front cover and title have around four to eight seconds to impress your potential buyer. Be clear, use metaphor and make sure your visuals connect to your title. . Elicit an emotion by your title words (preferably 5-7 words). What solutions and results does your book promise?

5. Expand your book into a series. Think of the huge success of the Chicken Soup Series. They have one cover for all the titles. One count was 12 million. Include from 3-5 bullets of benefits, what your book promises its readers if you have room. Remember, testimonials sell more books than anything else.

7. Create your written marketing plan before you finish your book. This plan covers your first year’s launch period and lifetime plan. You’ll want to market at least one year. Inexperienced authors wait until publication and lose a great deal of sales. Your plan could include how many books you want to sell or how much money your want to make each month. Include your 30 second tell and sell, book reviews, news releases, the articles to market your book, the book signings, talks, electronic newsletters, and a book web site. 8. Put as much time into marketing as you did the writing of your book. Your goal is to have people read and learn from your unique message. Why plant a garden if you don’t harvest it? Your HLA’s may include writing an article to post on high-traffic web sites (my favorite), contacting a person to co-market, writing a book sales letter for your web site.

9. Include web marketing to sell more books. While you can sell your books on other people’s site, you eventually will want your own. An author without a web site is like a person without a name. Your site can contain book reviews, testimonials, excerpts and short articles related to its topic. You need to first copywrite your home page and sales letter for each book. Then contact a reputable web master to design it.

10. Discover advanced article marketing, where you write short articles and excerpts from your book. Then submit them to high-traffic web sites. Every day people search for free information on sites such as www.ezinearticles.com. When they read and like your article, they will click onto the link that leads them right back to your web site.
